After a disappointing start to the season last week, Quasar traveled to Ellon for their second match of the season.
Quasar started strong, pressing Ellon and driving further into their half with the goal in sight. This allowed Quasar to receive two long corners within minutes of the match starting. Good passages of play from the right and left midfielders, Kirsten and Claire, into the centre allowed centre midfielders June and Captain Aimee to push the game forward and for striker, Isla to get a shot on goal. This resulted in a goal in the 5th minute from Isla. Quasar stayed on top of the match and received a penalty corner in the 9th minute, which unfortunately didn’t result in a goal but minutes after, Quasar was awarded another penalty corner. Again no goal was scored. Quasar used the right wing more to attack, which allowed striker Cara to pass a side line ball into fellow striker Erin who scored in the 22nd minute. Ellon fought back and scored 11 minutes later. The game was very balanced until the end of the second half with Ellon and Quasar having more shots on goal, of which none resulted in a goal.
Starting the second half, Quasar were determined to stay on top but Ellon were also determined to get another goal. Both teams stayed strong through-out the second half but Ellon pushed harder to get into Quasar’s D. Ellon nearly got a goal in the 11th minute but defenders, Susan, Jenna and Heather worked together, chased back and kept their heads. Communication was the key! Goalkeeper Louise made her presence known by having successful dives and keeping all shots on goal successfully out of the goal! Ellon were awarded two penalty corners straight after each other and both of the penalty corners were defended successfully. Quasar was caught out on the break by Ellon numerous times but Quasar managed to slow the game down, calm it down and gradually get the ball back up the pitch towards Ellon’s goal. Everyone made good runs to make space to get a pass which allowed Quasar to receive a penalty corner in the 34th minute. A straight strike from Isla nearly won Quasar their 3rd goal but it narrowly missed. There was good runs made by strikers Zoe and Nic with Lara backing up. Both teams fought equally as hard in the dying minutes of the match however no other goals were scored.
A good result for Quasar and a big thanks to Pam for umpiring.
